You might think the art of portraiture is a purely civilized and benign endeavour.
But Calgary-born artist Erik Olson’s descriptions about his new exhibit at Barbara Edwards Contemporary suggest there is much more conflict, strife and action involved in this art form than meets the eye. At least for him. 
Take his choice of unsettling imagery when discussing The Student, a self-portrait and one of the more abstract offerings on display.
